How to make calls online from your browser (no app, no SIM)

A step-by-step guide to calling mobiles and landlines from a browser tab: what you need, which calls are free, how caller ID verification works, how to read a per-minute quote, and how to keep call quality high.

Calling online means the call starts in a browser tab and ends on an ordinary phone. There is no SIM card, no desk phone and no app store. The browser captures your microphone, sends the audio over the internet to a calling service, and that service connects the call to the mobile or landline you dialled. This guide walks through the setup once, so the next call takes seconds.

What you need

  • An up-to-date browser: Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari on a laptop, desktop or phone.
  • A microphone. A headset is better than a built-in microphone, because it removes echo and background noise.
  • A stable internet connection. A voice call needs far less bandwidth than a video call, but it needs it steadily, so a wired connection or strong Wi-Fi beats a weak signal.
  • A phone number you already own, for the caller ID. The service calls it once to confirm it is yours.
  • A payment card, if the service works with a prepaid balance.

Can you call online for free?

Sometimes. A call between two apps, such as a WhatsApp or FaceTime call, is free when both people use the same app and have internet access. A call that ends on a real phone number is different: the mobile or landline network at the other end charges to connect it, and a calling service passes that cost on. Services that advertise free calls to phones give you a few trial minutes, limit you to a handful of countries, or play advertisements first.

The honest version is a free trial followed by a clear price. LapLine credits every new account with free trial minutes, so the first call to a real number costs nothing, and after that the dialer shows the exact per-minute price before each call.

Step 1: pick a service that shows the price first

International rates differ by country and by whether you call a mobile or a landline. A service that quotes the price of the exact number before you press call removes the guesswork. Prefer per-minute pricing without a subscription when your calls are irregular, and a plan only when you call one country for hours every month.

Step 2: verify the number you want people to see

People answer numbers they recognise. With LapLine you enter a number you already own, receive one verification call on it, and from then on that number is shown to the people you call. You can verify up to five numbers and pick the one to show before each call, for example a local number for each market you sell in.

Step 3: add money, then dial in international format

Top up a prepaid balance by card. Then type the number with a plus sign and the country code, for example +44 for the United Kingdom, +91 for India or +234 for Nigeria, followed by the national number without its leading zero. The plus sign works from every country, so you never need to remember 00 or 011.

Step 4: read the quote before you press call

A good quote tells you the total per minute, that minutes are charged per started minute, and what you pay while the other phone rings. LapLine shows all three for the number you typed and keeps the quoted rate for the whole call, including time on hold. If your balance would not pay for a full minute, it says so before you call.

Getting good call quality

  • Use a headset. Echo cancellation in browsers is good, but a headset is better.
  • Allow microphone access when the browser asks, and check the site is using the device you expect.
  • Close tabs that stream video or upload files while you talk.
  • Prefer Wi-Fi or a wired connection over a weak mobile signal. Switching networks mid-call drops the audio for a moment.
  • Turn off VPNs that route your traffic through a distant country. Extra distance adds delay.

Keeping costs visible

Choose a service that logs every call with its duration and final charge, lets you export the history, and caps automatic top-ups at an amount you set. Those three habits keep an online phone bill as predictable as a prepaid SIM, with none of the roaming surprises.

LapLine does all of the above from a browser tab: free trial minutes, verified caller ID, a live per-minute quote before each call, one prepaid balance, and a call log you can export.
